Cominciamo con il toglierci dalla testa l'idea che tutto ciò che subisce danni a causa di un terremoto o di un'eruzione sia "costruzione abusiva" o "disgrazia voluta". Le costruzioni abusive esistono ma non tutte quelle che si trovano in zone di pericolo sono "abusive".

Continuiamo dicendo che se il fatto di costruire in zona sismica-vulcanica è "folle e illegale" allora tutta l'Italia è da evacuare e demolire, perchè tutto il nostro Paese - dal Trentino a Lampedusa - è un gigantesco sistema di faglie attive, di cui Appennini e Alpi sono la più evidente e sconvolgente testimonianza quotidiana. 

Il suolo ribolle di gas vulcanici intorno all'Etna, ai piedi del Vesuvio, ma anche nelle pianure dell'Emilia-Romagna, sulle rive dei laghi lombardi e tra le colline toscane. Non c'è un solo angolo d'Italia che non sia territorio sismico e/o vulcanico. Si salva forse soltanto la Sardegna... e non è nemmeno certo che sia così!

Sono decenni che, da meridionale, ad ogni terremoto del sud sento dire: "Eh certo, costruite male e dove non dovreste". E mi domando perchè non si dica lo stesso delle centinaia di paesini appollaiati sull'Appennino Tosco-Emiliano-Ligure, che crollano ogni due o tre anni per via di scosse di terremoto isolate. E mi domando perchè non si parli di abusivismo anche per le cittadine che costellano la pianura Padana, dove ogni tanto le zolle di terra si smuovono da sole e il fango bollente esce a schizzi.

TUTTA L'ITALIA E' UN GIGANTESCO VULCANO che può spezzarsi, muoversi, esplodere o eruttare in qualunque punto del territorio. Rimbalzarsi colpe cretine non aiuta a risolvere il problema. Insultare i geologi e i vulcanologi perchè "non sanno prevedere un evento" (NESSUNO, NEMMENO DIO, può prevedere con esattezza un'eruzione o un terremoto), deridere i ricercatori che si spaccano le ossa analizzando grotte, cunicoli, sfiati in giro per il Paese, dare retta ai veggenti che profetizzano catastrofi basandosi sulle prove del nulla... tutto questo non aiuta.

Bisogna affidarsi e fidarsi della scienza che studia la voce della Terra. Perchè anche se non può darci risposte certe, può darci le conoscenze e le esperienze per convivere con terremoti ed eruzioni. Invece di insultare i napoletani o i siciliani - che per inciso accettano il rischio di vivere vicino ai vulcani per coltivare quella terra ricchissima che rende il nostro prodotto "made in Italy" così apprezzato nel mondo! - ascoltate i geologi. Ascoltateli, e imparate da loro tutto ciò che si può imparare per difendersi e reagire a terremoti ed eruzioni lì dove siete. Perchè quando nasci e cresci su una terra impazzita (e tutta Italia lo è), o alzi bandiera bianca e scappi ... oppure impari a capire cosa sta sotto le suole delle tue scarpe.

Let's start by getting out of our heads the idea that everything that suffers damage due to an earthquake or an eruption is "illegal construction" or "deliberate misfortune". Illegal constructions exist but not all those rising in danger zones are "illegal".

Let's continue by saying that if building in a seismic-volcanic zone is "crazy and illegal" then all of Italy must be evacuated and demolished, because our entire country - from Trentino region to Lampedusa island - is a gigantic system of active faults, of which our mountains (Apennines and Alps) are the most evident and shocking daily testimony. 

The ground boils with volcanic gases around Mount Etna, at the foot of Vesuvius, but also in the plains of Emilia-Romagna, on the shores of Lombardy lakes and among the Tuscan hills. There is not a single corner of Italy that is not seismic and/or volcanic territory. Perhaps only Sardinia is a safe place ... and I underline "perhaps"!

For decades, as a southerner, at every earthquake in the south Italy I have heard them say: "Oh sure, you build badly and where you should not". And I wonder why they don't say the same of the hundreds of villages perched on the Tuscan-Emilian-Ligurian Apennines, which collapse every two or three years due to isolated earthquakes. And I wonder why they don't talk about illegal construction also for the towns that dot the Po Valley, where every now and then the clods of earth move on their own and the boiling mud comes out in splashes.

ALL OF ITALY IS A GIGANTIC VOLCANO that can break, move, explode or erupt anywhere in the territory. Throwing idiotic blame around doesn't help solve the problem. Insulting geologists and volcanologists because "they don't know how to predict an event" (NO ONE, NOT EVEN GOD, can accurately predict an eruption or an earthquake), mocking researchers who break their bones analyzing caves, tunnels, vents around the country, listening to the idiot prophets who see catastrophes coming, based on the evidence of nothing... all this DOES NOT help.

We must rely on, and trust the science that studies the voice of Planet Earth. Because even if it cannot give us certain answers, it can give us the knowledge and experiences to live with earthquakes and eruptions. Instead of insulting the Neapolitans or Sicilians - who incidentally accept the risk of living near volcanoes so to cultivate that very rich land that makes our "made in Italy" product so appreciated in the world! - let's listen to the geologists. Listen to them, and learn from them everything you can learn to defend yourself and react to earthquakes and eruptions on the place. Because when you are born and grown up on a crazy land (and all of Italy is), you either raise the white flag and run away... or you try to understand what is under the soles of your shoes.

Empecemos por sacarnos de la cabeza la idea de que todo lo que sufre daños por un terremoto o una erupción es “construcción ilegal” o “desgracia deliberada”. Las construcciones ilegales existen pero no todas las que se levantan en zonas de peligro son "ilegales".

Sigamos diciendo que si construir en una zona sísmico-volcánica es "una locura ilegal", entonces toda Italia debe ser evacuada y demolida, porque todo nuestro país - desde la región de Trentino hasta la isla de Lampedusa - es un gigantesco sistema de fallas activas, del que nuestras montañas (Apeninos y Alpes) son el testimonio diario más evidente e impactante. 

El suelo está lleno de gases volcánicos alrededor del Etna, al pie del Vesubio, pero también en las llanuras de Emilia-Romaña, a orillas de los lagos de Lombardía y entre las colinas toscanas. No hay un solo rincón de Italia que no sea territorio sísmico y/o volcánico. Quizás sólo Cerdeña sea un lugar seguro... ¡y subrayo el "quizás"!

Desde hace décadas, como sureña, despues de cada terremoto en el sur de Italia los oigo decir: "Oh, claro, se construye mal y donde no se debe". Y me pregunto por qué no dicen lo mismo de los cientos de pueblos encaramados en los Apeninos toscano-emilianos-ligures, que se derrumban cada dos o tres años debido a terremotos aislados. Y me pregunto por qué no hablan de construcciones ilegales también en las ciudades que salpican el valle del Po, donde de vez en cuando los terrones de tierra se mueven solos y el barro hirviendo sale a chorros.

TODA ITALIA ES UN VOLCÁN GIGANTESO que puede romperse, moverse, explotar o hacer erupción en cualquier parte del territorio. Lanzar culpas idiotas no ayuda a resolver el problema. Insultar a los geólogos y vulcanólogos porque “no saben predecir un evento” (NADIE, NI SIQUIERA DIOS, puede predecir con precisión una erupción o un terremoto), burlarse de los cientìficos que se rompen los huesos analizando cuevas, túneles, crateres en todo el país, escuchar a los profetas tontos que ven venir catástrofes, basándose en la evidencia de nada... todo esto NO ayuda.

Debemos apoyarnos y confiar en la ciencia que estudia la voz del Planeta Tierra. Porque aunque no pueda darnos respuestas ciertas, puede darnos el conocimiento y las experiencias para vivir con terremotos y erupciones. ¡En lugar de insultar a los napolitanos o a los sicilianos - que por cierto aceptan el riesgo de vivir cerca de los volcanes para cultivar esa tierra riquísima que hace que nuestro producto "made in Italy" sea tan apreciado en el mundo! - escuchemos a los geólogos. Escúchalos y aprende de ellos todo lo que puedas aprender para defenderte y reaccionar ante terremotos y erupciones en el mismo lugar. Porque cuando naces y creces en una tierra loca (y toda Italia lo es), o levantas la bandera blanca y huyes... o intentas comprender lo que hay debajo de las suelas de tus zapatos.
